I had no intention of buying any plants. It was early March after all and we still had at least six inches of snow still on the ground. Of course that means I walked out of the store with over a dozen bare root plants. Don’t tell me you’ve never done that.
But one of the plants I was intrigued about was a Chicago Hardy Fig Tree. I gotta say, I was not impressed with the packaging or the size of this little guy. It looked completely out of place here in North Idaho. So I grabbed my phone and did a quick search on it. Apparently, figs really can grow here!
Chicago Hardy was bred specifically for cold weather climates. I grabbed two of them and kept them in our shop so they would stay dormant while we waited for the snow to clear. I unboxed them yesterday and put them in the ground. The roots were in decent shape, even if the rest of the plant looked a little worse for wear.
I’ve now seen them stocked in a couple of other stores, so if you want to test out a new project give it a try. I’ll keep everyone updated on our progress here. Hopefully in a couple of years we’ll be dining on Idaho Figs!
